Since our last group meeting and my last post I been thinking about a few things. First, the large role that typography has in this project and how different typography can redefine the message of the text projected on the wall. Being a visual artist, all I knew about typography and the message each type portrays on its own was intuitive (visually), so it was only a natural step to do a bit of research. Even though must of the information I found had a print or digital media and branding profile, it was still helpful for understanding key concepts about the usage of different types. After reading this I made four mock ups for the project. I wanted to experiment with the tacit message each type has and how that effects on the impact the written message has on the viewer. I think this is more evident in samples 1 and 2 where the written message is pretty bold and somewhat panicky in nature. Sample 1 I feel depicts this perfectly whereas sample 2 strips the message of that nature. I used different colours in each sample to also experiment with that factor and over a grey background similar to the Cameron offices’ wall. I’m not sure yet if when projecting onto the wall different colours will be possible. One problem that I could see emerging from using colour type is rendering the text unreadable. I will find out in the following weeks when we start doing trials.
Second, if is favourable to have live Twitter feeds on the day of the projection. In the meeting it was suggested to me to curate a database of tweets. I disregarded this at first because I felt that in order emphasise the direct connection the posts have with the city and suburb they have to be sourced live. Nevertheless, as I looked for posts to do the typography experiments mentioned above I realised how some posts can work better than others. So now curating a database is starting to manifest itself as a real option. If I’m going to make a database for this project under what guidelines would that be? Just having posts made within a certain time of the day or the ones that talk about the weather or feelings or would that be too trivial? I know that I still want to use posts made about Canberra and Belconnen but what else would serve as a tool for selecting the posts? Two inputs on this subject from Twitter and Guardian . And more to think about…
